Steve Smith Hits Century: Australia into Strong Position in Boxing Day Test

Boxing Day Test

Australian vice-captain Steve Smith stole the show on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne with a remarkable century. Australia are now in a commanding position. Smith, however, admitted feeling uneasy watching Virat Kohli bat earlier in the day, describing Kohli as a “class player.”

The day also saw a crucial turning point when a mix-up between Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal resulted in the latter’s run-out. This caused the Indian batting collapse.

Smith on Jaiswal-Kohli Run-Out

Addressing the press after the day’s play, Smith commented on the miscommunication between Kohli and Jaiswal that led to Jaiswal’s dismissal.

“It looked like Jaiswal called for the run, but Kohli sent him back. It was a crucial moment in the game,” Smith said.

The run-out occurred when Jaiswal, attempting a quick single off a drive to mid-on, was left stranded after Kohli failed to respond. Pat Cummins, the Australian captain capitalized on the confusion, throwing the ball to Alex Carey, who removed the bails in a flash.

Virat Kohli’s Impressive Yet Brief Knock

Kohli’s innings of 36 off 86 balls showcased his class. He held the innings together alongside Jaiswal in a 102-run third-wicket partnership. Smith acknowledged Kohli’s ability, recalling his brilliance in Perth and observing his form during the MCG innings.

“(Virat) Kohli is a class player. He played well in Perth and looked good today. For a moment, I thought we were in for a masterclass. Fortunately, Boland got one,” Smith remarked.

Kohli’s dismissal came after Jaiswal’s run-out, breaking his rhythm. Chasing a wide delivery from Scott Boland, Kohli edged it to Alex Carey, giving Australia a decisive breakthrough.

Indian Collapse After Promising Start in Boxing Day Test

India, at one point comfortably placed at 2-153. But after Jaiswal’s departure, lost three wickets for just six runs. Kohli’s dismissal marked the beginning of a slide, leaving the team reeling at the end of the day.
