Rohit Sharma Likely to Retire After Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024

Sydney/IBNS, Dec. 31: India captain Rohit Sharma may retire from Test cricket after the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Reports suggest he could announce his decision after the five-match series against Australia.

India trails 1-2 and will play the final Test in Sydney from January 3-7.

India’s Struggles in the Series

India’s 184-run defeat in the fourth Test has left their WTC final hopes hanging. They must win in Sydney and rely on Australia losing their two-match series against Sri Lanka.

If India qualifies, Rohit might request to play the WTC final.

Rohit’s Poor Form

Rohit, 37, has scored just 31 runs in five innings. His struggles have raised doubts about his performance at this stage of his career.

Despite skipping the Perth Test, Rohit has failed to counter Australia’s strong bowling attack.

India’s batting has often collapsed, with seniors underperforming. Kohli scored a century in Perth but hasn’t been consistent. Jasprit Bumrah has been India’s star performer with 30 wickets.

Rohit retired from T20 cricket after leading India to a World Cup win but has struggled in Tests against Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

Boxing Day Test Loss

India lost the Boxing Day Test by 184 runs at MCG. The batting lineup collapsed again, managing only 155 in the second innings.

Rishabh Pant’s ill-timed shot led to his dismissal after a cautious 30 off 104 balls. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 84 but was controversially dismissed. His earlier runout after a mix-up with Kohli also hurt India.

What’s Next for India and Rohit?

India faces pressure to level the series in Sydney. Rohit’s future in Test cricket is uncertain. If he retires, it will be the end of an era.

India needs Kohli, Pant, and other senior players to step up in the absence of consistent performances from Rohit.
