Orlando Pride Wins First NWSL Championship, Defeating Washington Spirit 1-0

Orlando Pride made history by winning their first NWSL Championship defeating Washington Spirit 1-0 at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City. Barbra Banda’s first-half goal secured the victory while the Pride’s defense delivered an outstanding performance to protect the lead.

How the Match Unfolded

Orlando took the lead in the 23rd minute. Angelina dispossessed Washington midfielder Leicy Santos in a strong challenge. She then passed the ball to Barbra Banda who calmly scored past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury. Despite Washington’s protests the referee allowed the goal to stand.

The Spirit dominated possession firing 26 shots compared to Orlando’s nine. However, their efforts repeatedly fell short due to Orlando’s organized defense. Forward Trinity Rodman battling a back injury, tried her best but admitted she wasn’t at her peak.

“I wasn’t the Trin I wanted to be today,” Rodman said after the match. “But their defense deserves credit. They shut me down.”

Kerry Abello of Orlando received a yellow card in the first half for fouling Rodman on a counterattack. Still Orlando adjusted well doubling up on Rodman and limiting her space.

Despite late pressure, including five shots from Rodman, Washington couldn’t find an equalizer. Orlando’s defense led by goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, stood strong until the final whistle.

Orlando’s defensive strategy was crucial. Pride players blocked shots, tracked back and made key interceptions. Coach Seb Hines praised his team’s effort, saying that “The players threw their bodies on the line. That’s what won us the championship.”

For Washington Rodman struggled to make a significant impact due to her injury and tight marking from Orlando’s defenders.
