kabaddi experienced a thrilling yet challenging year in 2024. The year was marked by exciting national competitions and the successful Pro Kabaddi League (PKL). However, a major setback came with India’s suspension from international kabaddi tournaments due to administrative issues, leaving a void on the global stage.
Pro Kabaddi League 10 and National Competitions
The tenth season of the Pro Kabaddi League (2023-24) continued into 2024. For the first time since 2019, the tournament returned to its original caravan format, touring all 12 cities home to the teams. After 132 league matches and intense playoffs the finale on March 1 saw Puneri Paltan claim their maiden PKL title by defeating Haryana Steelers 28-25 in Hyderabad. Raider Pankaj Mohite’s clutch performance sealed the victory showcasing the triumph of an academy-driven talent system.
Kabaddi shone brightly at the Khelo India Youth Games 2024 held in Tamil Nadu in January. Haryana dominated the tournament, winning both the boys’ and girls’ titles, solidifying its reputation as a kabaddi powerhouse.
March also witnessed the 70th Senior National Men’s Kabaddi Championship in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Haryana triumphed over Indian Railways in a nail-biting final, marking their first Senior Nationals win in over a decade.
The First-Ever World Beach Kabaddi Championship
A historic moment for kabaddi unfolded with the inaugural World Beach Kabaddi Championship held in Iran in September. Iran clinched the title after defeating Pakistan in a high-energy final. Unfortunately India missed this milestone due to its suspension by the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF).
Pro Kabaddi League 11: A New Champion
The eleventh season of PKL began in October, culminating in Haryana Steelers winning their maiden title. Mohammadreza Shadloui’s stellar all-round performance earned him the MVP award, showcasing the league’s role in promoting international stars.
Despite challenges, kabaddi’s domestic success in 2024 proved its resilience and growing popularity.
