After losing by eight wickets in the first Test in Bengaluru, India faced another big loss in Pune, where they were defeated by 113 runs. Chasing a target of 359 runs, India struggled as New Zealand took advantage of their 103-run lead from the first innings.
India’s Batting Struggles Despite Jaiswal’s Performance
During India’s attempt to chase the target, the batting lineup faced trouble against New Zealand’s strong bowling. Yashasvi Jaiswal put up a fight, scoring 77 runs, and Ravindra Jadeja added 42. However, key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fell for low scores again, with 8 and 17, respectively. Shubman Gill scored 23, and Rishabh Pant was run out without scoring, adding to India’s struggles. Sarfaraz Khan, who performed well in the first Test, scored only 9 in the second innings and 11 in the first.
India Loses Test Series
New Zealand declared their second innings at 255 runs, building on their advantage. Washington Sundar was the standout bowler for India, taking four wickets, while Jadeja took three and Ashwin two. But despite the good bowling, India’s batsmen couldn’t reach the high target, giving New Zealand a memorable series victory.
Mitchell Santner was the key player for New Zealand, taking 13 wickets in the match on a spin-friendly pitch. He earned the Player of the Match award for his impressive performance.
New Zealand’s First Series Win in India
This series win was historic for New Zealand, as it marked their first-ever Test series victory in India. With this win, New Zealand moved up to No.4 on the ICC World Test Championship 2025 table. India still holds the top spot, but their lead over Australia at No.2 has narrowed.
