In a historic moment during the 2023 ODI World Cup, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews became the first cricketer to be dismissed via the ‘timed out’ rule in an international match. This unprecedented incident occurred in a group-stage game against Bangladesh in Delhi. It is generating widespread discussion on sportsmanship and fair play in cricket.
Angelo Mathews vs the Clock
Sri Lanka was at 135/4 when Mathews stepped in to bat. As he prepared to face bowler Shakib Al Hasan, he noticed his helmet strap was broken, requiring a replacement. Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Shakib appealed to the umpires, claiming Angelo hadn’t readied himself within the ICC’s two-minute rule for incoming batters. The umpires upheld the appeal, declaring Mathews “timed out” — an international cricket first.
The ‘Timed Out’ Rule
According to ICC rules, a batter must be ready to face the ball within two minutes of the previous dismissal. Whereas it is three-minute standard with the MCC’s rule in domestic cricket. Mathews argued he was on the field and nearly ready but his helmet issue delayed him past the time limit. The decision visibly frustrated Mathews who expressed his disapproval on the field while Sri Lanka’s head coach Chris Silverwood also reacted strongly to the ruling.
