Ange Postecoglou: “Football Management Harder Than Being Prime Minister”
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has claimed that football management is harder than being Prime Minister. He shared his thoughts on the immense challenges managers face today, especially in the Premier League, where scrutiny is relentless, and job security is scarce.
High-Profile Sackings Reflect Pressure on Managers
Postecoglou’s remarks come in the wake of multiple managerial sackings this season. Wolves dismissed Gary O’Neil, and Southampton let go of Russell Martin after just six months. Martin’s sacking followed Southampton’s 5-0 loss to Tottenham. Leicester City’s Steve Cooper and Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag also lost their jobs earlier this season.
The Tottenham boss criticized how quickly clubs discard managers, despite their efforts. “Managers give their all, working 24/7, yet their replacements are already being discussed before they’re even dismissed,” Postecoglou said.
Lack of Respect for Managers
The Australian coach expressed disappointment over the lack of respect for managers. He said society has grown too quick to discard people without considering their contributions.
“As a society, we’ve crossed the line. We’re too quick to throw people in the trash and move on without care,” he said. “There’s no good way to sack a manager, but the way it’s done today is particularly harsh.”
Postecoglou highlighted how the pressures of the job take a toll on managers. “This role is the hardest in any walk of life,” he added.
Comparing Football Management to Being Prime Minister
Postecoglou boldly claimed that football management is even more challenging than being Prime Minister. “The Prime Minister has elections every few years. I have one every weekend,” he said. “Every weekend, I’m either voted in or out based on results.”
The Tottenham boss explained that managers rarely escape the job without scars, given the constant pressure and expectations.
Postecoglou on Tottenham’s Mixed Start
Despite Tottenham’s mixed start to the season, Postecoglou remains focused on his team’s progress. He acknowledged the challenges of managing in the Premier League, where success often depends on immediate results.
His comments shed light on the relentless nature of football management, where job security is fleeting, and respect for the role is diminishing.
