Ajay Thakur, the iconic former captain of India’s kabaddi team announced his retirement from international kabaddi through a heartfelt social media post. He stated “Retiring from international Kabaddi — last match December 28 at Melbourne Australia.”
A Stellar Career in Kabaddi
Ajay Thakur rose to fame during the Pro Kabaddi League and went on to become a legend in the sport. In 2017, he led India to a memorable victory in the Asian Kabaddi Championship. Born in Dhabota village Nalagarh Thakur achieved incredible success on the international stage winning two Asian Games gold medals.
Apart from his kabaddi career Thakur served with Indian Airlines and later joined the Himachal Pradesh Police as a DSP in 2017. For his outstanding contributions to sports he received the prestigious Parshuram Award.
Ajay Key Achievements
Thakur was the top raider in the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup scoring 68 points and leading India to gold. His career highlights include winning gold medals in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (2013), Asian Games (2014), and the Asian Kabaddi Championship (2017). He also brought home a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games.
A Legend Bids Farewell
In 2022 Thakur sought exemption from the Pro Kabaddi League and resigned as the captain of the state kabaddi team. His illustrious career, decorated with the Padma Shri and Arjuna Awards, remains an inspiration. Ajay Thakur’s retirement marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in kabaddi.
